The 2017 Eastern National Championships kicked off yesterday in Diamondale, Michigan hosted by Twistars Gymnastics. Easterns are comprised of the four regions east of the Mississippi River: Region 5, 6, 7, and 8. This is the first time Region 5 has hosted this championships since Branch Gymnastics hosted the event in 2013. Region 5, sporting our new regional color Magenta, for the first time, claimed 25 top 10 all around finishes with 3 Eastern National AA champions and leads the team standings after day 1.
Here are the team standings after day one. (note: 4 points for 1st, 3 for 2nd, 2 for 3rd and 1 for 4th place).
- Region 5 – 20 points
- Region 8- 17 points
- Region 7- 13 points
- Region 6- 10 points
The championships started with the Junior 1 and 2 athletes. In Junior 1 , Region 5 all around champion, Twistars Kendell Abney (Junior1) took top honors with her 37.65. Kendall only had one top 3 finish on bars but was consistent across the board to take the all around crown. Olivia Coppola of Cincinnati Gymnastics finished 3rd all around but took home two individual national titles on bars (9.60) and floor (9.575). Legacy Elite’s Taylor DeVries finished 9th all around but swing her way to a 9.575 and a 2nd place finish on bars.

In the Junior 2 competition, Perfection’s Piper Reed lead the way for Region 5 with her 6 place all around finish 37.275. Breaking into the top 10 as well was Ainsley Greever from Phenom Gymnastics who finished in 9th. We had two top 3 individual event finishes with regional all around champion Paige Yu of Medina taking 3rd on bars with a 9.525 and with the identical score, Cincinnati’s Ava Molina grabbed 2nd place on floor.

Junior 3 and 4’s were up next and Region 5 went 2, 3, and 6 in the all around in Junior 3. Twistars Eliana Thompson finished 2nd in the all around 37.7 just .25 behind the leader and only .025 ahead of her Region 5 teammate Cami Whitaker from St Charles who also tied for the eastern title on vault with her 9.6. Isabelle Rivelli of Naperville was 6th with her 37.525. Other top finishers included Lily Clapper from Gym America who finished 2nd on floor (9.525) and 3rd on vault (9.55). Legacy Elite’s Grace Ladgenski had a rough go at it on beam but tied Clapper on floor with a 9.525.

In the Junior 4 competition, Region 5 owned 5 of the top 10 all around spots. Emeth’s Shannon Case tied for the national all around title while claiming two individual titles along the way with her 9.7 on vault and 9.5 on floor. Twistars Alexia Xiromeritis finished 3rd 37.675, Paige Kirkham of Rockford tied for 6th 37.65, Madeline Kees of Energym 7th 37.4 and in 8th Mila Brush of Cincinnati with a 37.375. All five of these athletes finished in the top 3 on two individual events helping to put region 5 on top of the podium in the junior 4 team competition.

The final 2 age groups of day one were the Junior 5 and 6’s. In Junior 5, Region 5 went 3 through 7 in the all around with Kaitlyn Dembie of Gym World leading the way with her 3rd place 37.525 and grabbed the gold on floor with her 9.55. Finishing in the 4th spot was regional all around champion Gabrielle Pierce from Aerial. Pierce however took home some gold of her own winning the eastern vault title with a 9.6 for her very nice layout yurchenko (wasn’t there but know its good). Grabbing the 5th spot in the all around was Julia Armburst of Gym Nasti 37.275 followed closely behind by her region 5 teammate Jaylee McCarthy of Hunts 37.2. In 7th was Bay Valley’s Kemeny Berthiaume with a 36.95.

In the Junior 6 competition, Katya Sander of Perfection gave Region 5 another Eastern All Around Champion winning this age group a 37.7 and claiming the bar title as well with her 9.75. Sander’s Region 5 and club team Eliza Millar of Perfection finished 3rd all around but stole the show on beam (9.4) and floor (9.625) winning both events. Lucy Lehman of Phenom finished 5th all around 37.525 and 2nd on bars. Also finishing in the top 10 all around and making it 2 age groups with 5 in the top 10 on day 1, Karly Kim of Twistars was 8th 37.3 and Ariana Gilley fo Flip Zone was 10th 37.125. Kim and Gilley tied for 2nd on floor with a 9.5 while Kim grabbed 2nd on bars as well with her 9.5.
