20 Questions with Future UIC Flame Rylie Johnstone (Midland Gymnastics)

Our next 20 Questions athlete is a senior from Midland Gymnastics Training Center in Midland Michigan. Rylie Johnstone, has been on the Level 10 scene for a few years now. She most recently signed her NLI to compete for the Lady Flames of UIC. Rylie, who is most known for her tremendous vault ability, has come along way on all events in the last few years upgrading on almost every event. Rylie has been featured on Region 5 Insider in the past for her unique vault even earning herself a 2017 Yahtzee Award Nomination for it. Rylie, who has yet to hit her peak in the sport of gymnastics, kicks her senior season off this weekend at the MEGA Magic Meet in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Lets get to know Rylie Johnstone a little better as she begins her final season not only with Region 5, but also with her long time club MGTC. Rylie is posed to make a statement this year, I cannot wait to see what this year holds for this young lady.





How did you get into gymnastics? How old were you? I flipped off the couch all the time so my parents put me in gymnastics so I wouldn’t get hurt. I started gymnastics when I was 2.  I have loved gymnastics ever since.

What is your favorite event? My favorite event is Vault. It feels cool to be able to block and twist off a stationary object.

What is your favorite skill to train/compete?  My favorite skill to train/compete: I like to train a full in on floor. I love flying through the air while flipping and twisting at the same time.

Dream skill? My dream skill would be a Double arabian on floor. I see people do them and think they look cool.

What is your favorite part of gymnastics? My favorite part of gymnastics is that I like the bond I have with my coaches and teammates. My
teammates are like sisters to me. We tell each other everything and help each other when someone needs it.

What College Do you plan on attending? I have signed a NLI to compete gymnastics for the University of Illinois at Chicago on a gymnastics scholarship.

What is your  Favorite meet to compete at? Circle of Stars in Indianapolis because you get to compete with gyms from across the country. Indianapolis is a fun town.

What is your Biggest accomplishment? Being a level 10 for 4 years and earning a college scholarship to continue the sport I love.

Who do you most admire in the sport of gymnastics? I admire Ashton Locklear because she has good lines on bars. It is cool to watch her bar routine because it all flows together.

What is your  Favorite Region 5 Insider series? My favorite feature or series is All access because you get to see how other gyms practice and see the variety of techniques they have.

What is your Favorite song or go to playlist? My favorite is the music on my iphone. I love country music especially Blake Shelton.

If you were trapped on a Deserted island what would you bring? 1. My iphone because I could not live without it. I am on it all the time. 2. Wifi because I can’t use my phone without it! 3. A towel. I can use it to dry off after swimming and also use it as a blanket if I get cold.

If you could be any animal what Animal what you be and why? I would be a penguin. I love them! They get to slide on their stomachs across
the ice into the water to swim around.

Who is your Favorite superhero? My favorite superhero is Superman. He can do anything, save people, and he’s cute.




Do you have any Pre-meet rituals or superstitions?  I wear the same underclothes, use the same hair ties, wear my hair the same way, and put on my makeup the same way.

What d you like to donOutside of gymnastics? Outside of gym I like to listen to music, spend time with my friends, and go the movies and beach.

What is your Most embarrassing gym moment or meet moment? When I was 5 I was doing the splits and I peed on the floor.

If you didn’t do gymnastics what Other sport would you try? I would do is volleyball. I like to play it for recreation with friends.

Which Athletes (any sport) do you respect the most? Gymnasts of course! They are the strongest per pound athletes. They are in the gym all the time year round. They are great athletes!

 

What is the most valuable advice or wisdom you coach has ever given you? The most valuable advice my coach has ever given me would be Do your best and have fun!

 

Tell me something interesting about yourself…..Something interesting about me is that I am really shy until I know someone then I like to be loud and crazy.

20 Questions with JO National Qualifier Mayleigh Vanderbeek (Champion USA)

It does not matter where I am on the competition floor, when Mayleigh Vanderbeek of Champion USA in Holland, Michigan starts cheering for her teammates I instantly know who it is and  where she is in the arena. Mayleigh has the most energy and team spirit of any person I know, when she is on the competition floor she can be heard from anywhere cheering on not only her own clubmates, but anyone who is getting ready to take the floor. May could earn the Team Spirit Yahtzee Award all on her own…lol that is just the type of person she is, high energy, happy go lucky, positive and one of the most supportive people around. Mayleigh shows this high level of positiveness and energy in all of her routines. You can tell she absolutely loves what she is doing! I cannot wait for the season to begin so I can watch this brilliant young lady take command of the competition floor. Lets get to know Mayleigh a little bit better as she heads into the 2017-2018 competitive season. How did you get into gymnastics? How old were you? I was five years old when I started gymnastics. My mom put me in a class to learn my back handspring so I could become a cheerleader. Turned out I wanted to be a gymnast instead.
What is your favorite event? My favorite event is floor or beam because I like to show off my personality throughout my routines.

What is your favorite skill to train/compete? My favorite skill is a double layout on bars because I feel like I’m floating through the air.

What is your dream skill? My dream skill is my Onodi on beam.

What is your favorite part of gymnastics? My favorite part about gymnastics is being with my teammates and creating a sisterhood with them.

What college do you plan on attending? I plan on attending the University of Kentucky on a full ride gymnastics scholarship.

What is your favorite meet to compete at? My favorite meet to compete at is probably our home meet because all friends and family can come to watch and support me.

What is your biggest accomplishment in gymnastics so far? My biggest accomplishment is getting a scholarship to a D1 school.

Who do you admire most in the sport of gymnastics? Shawn Johnson is the person I most admire because she was always happy and bubbly.

What is your go to playlist or song before meets? I don’t really have a
favorite playlist that I listen to but I like to get pumped up with my teammates before meets.

If you were trapped on a deserted island what would you bring with you? If I was trapped on an island I would bring my mom, food, and of course my phone.

If you could be any animal what animal would you be and why? If I could be any animal I would be a dolphin because I could swim all day and do really cool tricks.

Who is your favorite Super Hero? My favorite superhero is Captain underpants because its my imaginary superhero.

Do you have any pre-meet rituals or superstitions? My pre-meet ritual is getting hyped up with my teammates.

What do you like to do outside of gymnastics? Outside of gymnastics I like to go shopping and hang out with my friends.

Most embarrassing meet moment or gymnastics moment? The most embarrassing moment is when I screamed “oh buddy” during my vault at state meet this year.

If you weren’t a gymnast, what sport would you try? If I wasn’t a gymnast I would do track

Which athletes (any sport) do you respect the most and why? I respect gymnast the most because we train all your round and we have the best work ethic.

What is the most valuable piece of advice or wisdom your coach has given you? The most valuable piece of advice my coach has given me is just be yourself and always have fun

20 Questions with JO National Qualifier Anna Grace McCullough (Branch Gymnastics)

Our next Region 5 athlete hail from Branch Gymnastics in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Anna Grace McCullough (AG) has been in the sport of gymnastics her entire life starting in the typical way with mommy & me classes. Anna has qualified to the National Championships every year she has been eligible with this past year being her first time as a first year Level 10. AG who was nominated in the “Best Form” Yahtzee Award category, sets herself apart from the rest with her long lines, beautiful form and eye catching presence on the competition floor. AG is a bit taller than the other athletes, so everything she does appears a bit bigger and more sharp. She showcases effortless gymnastics on many events. Being only a sophomore in high school Anna Grace has a few more years left with us here in Region 5, having watched this athlete grow I am personally looking forward to the next few years. I believe AG has not yet hit her peak and has so much more amazing gymnastics to show us! Let’s get to know Anna a little better as she begins her 2nd Level 10 season with Branch Gymnastics and Region 5.





 

How did you get into gymnastics? How old were you? I started with mommy-and-me classes when I was about two years old. Ever since then I have loved the sport!

What is your favorite event? My favorite event is bars or beam.

Favorite Skill to train/compete? My favorite skill to compete is my jaeger on bars. I love the rush of just “flying”.

Dream Skill? My dream skill is a double double on floor. Those just amaze me so much and I would love to be able to compete one or train it one day.

What is your favorite part of gymnastics? My favorite part of gymnastics is competing. I love all the butterflies and showing off what I have worked so hard to accomplish.

What college do you plan on attending? I am currently not committed, but i hope to go back down south to carry on my gymnastics career.

What is your favorite meet to compete at? My favorite meet to compete at is the Bahamas, Atlantis meet. Being down there with all my teammates is so much fun. We all have a blast.

Biggest accomplishment in gymnastics so far? My biggest accomplish in gymnastics is making nationals in all my years of being a level 9 and 10.

Who do you most admire in the sport of gymnastics? I admire my mom, who was a former gymnast at Southeast Missouri. Also, my coaches who worked so hard in their gymnastics career and now are pushing me to be my best.

What is your favorite Region 5 Insider Feature or Series? I love when Region 5 does the “Gymnasts Eye” videos. I love figuring out what skills they are doing.

What is your go to playlist or song before meets? I have my own playlist before meets. It’s really just pump up songs that get me excited to compete.

If you were trapped on a deserted island what 3 things would you take and why? I would take a sleeping bag (for shelter), a knife (to help defend myself), and some extra clothes and shoes for protection.

If you could be any animal, what animal would you be and why? I would be a turtle, because I don’t have any expectations to be anywhere from people because I am so slow.

Who is your favorite superhero? Wonderwoman

Do you have any pre-meet rituals or superstitions? Before meets I do my hair the same way and use the same hair bands. I also wear the same sports bra to every meet.

What do you like to do outside of Gymnastics? I like to hang out with my friends and do water sports.

Most embarrassing meet moment or gymnastics moment? My very first real gymnastics coach, I was scared to death of him. Whenever he would try to spot me, I would run and hold on to my dad’s leg. I would not let go.

If you weren’t a gymnast, what sport would you do or try? I would try to do basketball because my brother and dad have always wanted me to play. Also I would try volleyball.

Which athletes (any sport) do you respect the most and why? I respect Michael Phelps a lot because was in his first olympics when he was 15. He has been in 4 more since and never given up.

What is the most valuable piece of advice or wisdom your coach has given you? Enjoy it while you have it. This won’t last forever.

Bonus Question: Tell me something interesting about yourself…. When I lived in Alabama I hunted all the time, and I’m actually really good at it. There is something about getting up early and cuddling up in a tree stand while the sun rises. Nothing better.

Eye On 5: Gianna Gerdes, Gym Xtreme | Role Model, Positive Energy, Embraces the Struggle

In this Eye on 5, we get to know Gym Xtreme level 10 and future Minnesota Gopher GIanna Gerdes. Gianna is a 3x JO National Qualifier and finished 10th in the AA at JO’s in 2017. She is a role model for her the other gymnasts in her gym and sees that as one of her favorite opportunities with the sport. She has continued to make progress each and every year and always taking the good with the bad with her positive mind set. Learn more about one of our top Region 5 athletes.
