20 Questions with JO National Qualifier Nyah Smith (Oakland)

Our next 20 Questions Athlete is Oakland Gymnastics Senior Nyah Smith. Nyah, who has trained at Oakland her entire career,  has been a Level 10 since 2016 in her 2nd her as a 10 she qualified to the 2017 JO National Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana. Nyah, who’s younger sister Nikki is also a Level 10 at Oakland, is known for her double back beam dismount, which ironically her sister competes as well. Nyah, who attends North Farmington High School, is a talented young athlete who in the fall will be continuing her gymnastics career at Michigan State University, which I am sure her coach Ruth Miller loves being a Michigan State Alumni herself, the Spartans are home to quite a few Oakland Gymnastics Alums. So, let’s get to know Nyah a little bit better as she tries to qualify to one last JO National Championships in her Senior season as an Oakland Gymnast and a Region 5 Gymnast.

How did you get into gymnastics? How old were you?  I started gymnastics at age 2 in the Mommy & Me class at Oakland Gymnastics. I had lots of energy and loved jumping off everything – furniture, steps, and landings. My parents thought gymnastics would be a great fit to channel my energy and love for jumping around.

What is your favorite event? My favorite event is Vault.

Favorite Skill to train/compete: My favorite skill is double back off beam dismount.

Dream Skill? My dream skill is a Full-in on floor.

What is your favorite part of gymnastics?My favorite part of gymnastics is competition because I feel energized and confident.

What college do you plan on attending? Why? I plan to attend Michigan State University.

What is your favorite meet to compete at? Why? My favorite meet to compete is the Classic Rock Invitational in Phoenix, AZ because it is in a warm location and I have had great experiences competing there.

Biggest accomplishment in gymnastics so far? My biggest accomplishment is qualifying to JO Nationals.

Who do you most admire in the sport of gymnastics? Why? I admire that each gymnast has her own personal style or unique way of competing skills.

What is your favorite Region 5 Insider Feature or Series? Region 5 Spotlight is my favorite feature because it is a chance to learn about other Region 5 gymnasts.

What is your go to playlist or song before meets? My go to song is Dreams & Nightmares by Meek Mills.

3 Things you could not live without? The top 3 things in my life are (1) family, (2) friends and (3) phone.

If you could be any animal, what animal would you be and why? I would be a polar bear because they are cute but vicious.

5 Most Important or Must have Items in your gym bag? I must have (1) my headphones, (2) my grips, (3) fragrance body spray, (4) deodorant, and (5) Aquaphor.

What do you like to do outside of Gymnastics? I love to shop. I am a shopaholic.

Most embarrassing meet moment or gymnastics moment? At Elevate the Stage Meet, during warm-ups, going into my leap pass on floor, I slipped and fell because I used too much Aquaphor.

If you weren’t a gymnast, what sport would you do or try? I would play Volleyball.

What are you most looking forward to this competition session? Having a great final JO season with my teammates.

What is the most valuable piece of advice or wisdom your coach has given you? “Your mistakes do not define you.”

 Bonus Question:  Tell me something interesting about yourself…. I can cross one eye.

20 Questions with JO National Qualifier Elaina McGovern (Legacy)

Our next 20 Questions athlete is Legacy’s Elaina McGovern. Elaina is a 4th year Level 10 qualified to her 2nd JO National Championships in 2018, in 2017 she was an alternate. Elaina, who excels at the Uneven Bars is the reigning Kentucky State Bar Champion,  has a fun bubbly personalities and she a joy to watch on the competition floor. McGovern is a sophomore in High School, her ultimate goals in gymnastics are to return to the JO National Championships & obtain a college scholarship, which I am sure she will have no trouble doing both McGovern is a very talented young athlete. Let’s get to know Elaina a little bit better and she continues through her season on the road to the ultimate destination……JO NATIONALS.

How did you get into the sport of Gymnastics? How old were you? I got into gymnastics when I was 2 because a coworker of my mom’s said I should try it out.

What is your favorite event? My favorite event is bars.

What is your favorite skill to train/compete? My favorite skill to train is a rudi layout step out, and my favorite skill to compete is a full out dismount on bars.

What is your dream skill? My dream skill is double double off bars.

What is your favorite part of Gymnastics? My favorite part of gymnastics is being around my teammates all the time, because we always encourage each other.

If committed what college will you be attending and why? I haven’t decided what college I’m attending yet, but I want to go to a school with strong academics and a gymnastics program.

What is your favorite meet to compete at? Why? My favorite meet to compete at is Elevate the Stage because I love competing on podium.

What is your biggest accomplishment in Gymnastics so far? My biggest accomplishment so far is getting to represent Region 5 at Nationals.

Who do you admire in the sport of Gymnastics? Someone I look up to is Makarri Dogette because she is such a great gymnast and I love her floor routines.

What is your favorite Region 5 Series or Feature? My favorite Region 5 feature is All Access because I love seeing how people around our region train.

What is your go-to playlist or song before meets? My go-to playlist is my meet playlist, which has a lot of songs that get me excited to compete.

What are 3 things you could not live without? 3 things I couldn’t live without are fuzzy blankets, chapstick and milk.

If you could be any animal, what animal would you be and why? If I could be any animal, I would be a  corgi because they’re adorable and strong-willed.

5 most important or must have items in your gym bag? My must-have items in my bag are my grips, tiger paws, chapstick, snacks and tape.

Do you have any pre-meet rituals or superstitions? My pre-meet rituals are to eat pasta and listen to music.

What do you like to do outside of Gymnastics? Outside of gymnastics, I like to hang out with my friends, read, and play the ukulele.

What is your most embarrassing Gymnastics or meet moment? My most embarrassing moment was at the show down of the CGA meet. I slid off the beam on my series, and completely forgot what I was doing. I forgot my entire routine and had to make up dance.

If you weren’t a Gymnast what sport would you do or try? If I weren’t a gymnast, I would probably dive because I did it when I was little, and it’s really similar to gymnastics.

What are you most looking forward to this season? This season, I am looking forward to competing with my team and getting to travel.

What is the best advice or word of wisdom you have received from you coach(es)The best advice I’ve gotten is to take everything one step at a time, and don’t get ahead of myself.

College Salute Episode #2: Tiger Take Over, Denver Upset

In this episode of the College Salute Podcast we look at week 2 in the NCAA for 2019. This week featured a “Tiger” takeover with 3 teams all having the Tiger as their mascot with one surprisingly taking down the higher ranked opponent. We highlight some of the meets around the country with our region 5 alums, talked to Ohio State junior Olivia Aepli about her buckeyes start ot the season, spotlight 2 of our Division 3 alums and breakdown the NCAA qualifying procedures.
