Week #9 in the NCAA featured a battle in Norman of  the top two teams in the country, LSU senior Lexie Priessman gets her first 10.0, and we had some face first catches on bars. Region 5 was the premier region at the Nastia Cup and Perea returns to competition in Jesolo. We sat down with our Alumni Athlete of the Week conversation guest Anna Martucci Northern Illinois senior to talk about their rise to the top of the MAC in 2019 and her four years as a NIU gymnast.

2019 Hunt’s Born to Fly Meet Coverage

This past weekend was the 2019 Hunts Born to Fly Meet hosted by Hunts Gymnastics Academy in Chesterfield, Michigan. Hunts has been hosting this military themed competition for a few years now and it is always a great time to be a part of it. The Level 10 Teams competing this weekend were Bay Valley Academy, Splitz Gymnastics, Twistars, Oakland Gymnastics and the host team Hunts Gymnastics.

The 2019 version of the Nastia Cup proved to be very exciting and successful competition for Region 5. This competition features some of the best level 10’s in the country who have qualified through designated Nastia cup qualifying meets around the country in 2019. This event was held at the Greater Greensboro Coliseum Complex in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The 2018 JO National AA Champion Makarri Doggette from Buckeye Gymnastics, in her 6th Nastia Cup, achieved one of her biggest goals claiming the all around title with a 38.975. Makarri had to end the competition on beam and did it champion style scoring a 9.8, the highest beam score in the entire meet.

Region 5 was the most successful region at this years cup with all five senior age group qualifiers finishing in the top 8.  Aspire’s Sierra Brooks finished 4th with a 38.725, top qualifier Gabby Wilson from Olympia finished 6th with 38.625, and Legacy Elite duo Faith Torrez (38.575) and Andrea Li (38.525) finished 7th and 8th, respectively.

In the junior age group, Buckeye’s Natalie Martin, in her first Nastia Cup, finished 6th on vault 9.525) and 14th overall with a 36.825.

UIC Women’s Gymnastics beat Northern Illinois in their last and final home meet as a Division 1 program. UIC will be dropping their men’s and women’s gymnastics teams at the end of the 2019 season. Flames senior and Region 5 Alum Riley Mahoney joined us this week for our Alumni of the Week Conversation to discuss her college career, the impact UIC and her coaches have had on her and her thoughts on the program being dropped.
