2019 Hunt’s Born to Fly Meet Coverage

This past weekend was the 2019 Hunts Born to Fly Meet hosted by Hunts Gymnastics Academy in Chesterfield, Michigan. Hunts has been hosting this military themed competition for a few years now and it is always a great time to be a part of it. The Level 10 Teams competing this weekend were Bay Valley Academy, Splitz Gymnastics, Twistars, Oakland Gymnastics and the host team Hunts Gymnastics.

The 2019 version of the Nastia Cup proved to be very exciting and successful competition for Region 5. This competition features some of the best level 10’s in the country who have qualified through designated Nastia cup qualifying meets around the country in 2019. This event was held at the Greater Greensboro Coliseum Complex in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The 2018 JO National AA Champion Makarri Doggette from Buckeye Gymnastics, in her 6th Nastia Cup, achieved one of her biggest goals claiming the all around title with a 38.975. Makarri had to end the competition on beam and did it champion style scoring a 9.8, the highest beam score in the entire meet.

Region 5 was the most successful region at this years cup with all five senior age group qualifiers finishing in the top 8.  Aspire’s Sierra Brooks finished 4th with a 38.725, top qualifier Gabby Wilson from Olympia finished 6th with 38.625, and Legacy Elite duo Faith Torrez (38.575) and Andrea Li (38.525) finished 7th and 8th, respectively.

In the junior age group, Buckeye’s Natalie Martin, in her first Nastia Cup, finished 6th on vault 9.525) and 14th overall with a 36.825.

UIC Women’s Gymnastics beat Northern Illinois in their last and final home meet as a Division 1 program. UIC will be dropping their men’s and women’s gymnastics teams at the end of the 2019 season. Flames senior and Region 5 Alum Riley Mahoney joined us this week for our Alumni of the Week Conversation to discuss her college career, the impact UIC and her coaches have had on her and her thoughts on the program being dropped.

20 Questions with Senior Alina Miller (Perfection Gymnastics)

Our next 20 Questions Athlete is Alina Miller of Perfection School of Gymnastics in Cincinnati, Ohio. Alina, who first caught my eye last year with her unique bar combo, was nominated in the category for a 2018 Yahtzee Award. Alina is a powerful athlete especially on her favorite event the floor, her current floor routine is sassy, fun and high energy. Alina, is headed toward the end of her senior season with not only Perfection, but Region 5 as well. Let’s get to know Alina a little better as she finishes up her club career before heading to the warmth of Arizona to become a Sun Devil in the fall.

How did you get into gymnastics? How old were you? I got into gymnastics because, my mom said I had a lot of energy. I started gymnastics when I was about four years old.

What is your favorite event? My favorite event is Floor.

Favorite Skill to train/compete? My favorite skill to train is my double back on floor

Dream Skill? My dream skill is a full out on floor !

What is your favorite part of gymnastics? My favorite part of Gymnastics is traveling and creating close bonds with my teammates!

What college do you plan on attending? Why? I plan on attending Arizona State University because, it is a beautiful school with so many opportunities & the gymnastics team atmosphere is amazing !

What is your favorite meet to compete at? Why?My favorite meet to compete at is circle of stars because, they always have great gifts.

Biggest accomplishment in gymnastics so far? My biggest accomplishment in gymnastics so far was being able to comeback from a serious injury last season and putting up a great score on floor at state to contribute towards the team.

Who do you most admire in the sport of gymnastics? Why? I admire Aly Raisman the most in the sport of Gymnastics because, she is a great role model and is not afraid to speak on what’s right.

What is your favorite Region 5 Insider Feature or Series? My favorite Region 5 insider feature was the Fails of 2018.

What is your go to playlist or song before meets? My go to song before a meet is Life goes on by lil baby

3 Things you could not live without? My phone 2. My fuzzy blankets 3. Getting my eyebrows threaded

If you could be any animal, what animal would you be and why? I would be a sea turtle because, they live for a very long time and they seem like a carefree/chill animal.

5 Most Important or Must have Items in your gym bag? The 5 most important things in my gymbag is 1. Grips 2. Tiger paws 3. Tape 4. Inhaler 5. Carmax lip balm

Do you have any pre-meet rituals or superstitions? My pre-meet ritual is definitely listening to music.

What do you like to do outside of Gymnastics? Outside of Gymnastics I like to go shopping, and travel!

Most embarrassing meet moment or gymnastics moment? The most embarrassing gymnastics moment is when I was trying my first roundoff back handspring back tuck and I didn’t go for the back tuck and landed right on my head. I went straight up and straight down on my head.

If you weren’t a gymnast, what sport would you do or try? If I weren’t a gymnast I would try to play basketball or volleyball

What are you most looking forward to this competition session? This competition season I am definitely looking forward to traveling to California for the San Diego Classic!

What is the most valuable piece of advice or wisdom your coach has given you? The most valuable piece of advice that Enrique has given me is to be polite and always thank a coach after they help you!
