The 2019 HOPES season came to an end today with the HOPES Championships which is are part of the GK US Classic weekend. Region 5 qualified three athletes and all found themselves on the podium. Izzy Stassi from Five Star was the top finisher for Region 5 finishing 3rd in the 10-11 year age group. Izzy had a solid all around performance and vaulted her way to 2nd place with her nice Yurchenko full. Buckeye’s Carly Weinburg finished 6th in the 10-11 all around and grabbed 2nd place on bars with a nice toe handstand Pac Salto combo. Our only 12-13 year old, Gabby Van Frayen started the competition off strong but struggled a bit in her last rotation balance beam to finish 9th all around. Gabby however did a nice Yurchenko full to finish 3rd on vault. Though there were some mistakes, these three athletes did a great job in their first HOPEs championships and now they can give their bodies and minds a rest and begin working on upgrades for the 2020 JO and Elite season.

Classic Results: Juniors | Seniors

The 2019 GK US Classic was a rather successful competition when it comes to our Region 5 elite athletes participating. In the junior session Cincinnati’s Lilly Lippeatt finished 9th all around but scored above the 13 mark on all four events including a high of 13.55 for an awesome bar set. JPAC’s Elizabeth Gantner missed the qualifying score for championships but had a great competition improving almost all her scores including the all around (50.45) from the American Classic and competed an upgraded Yurchenko 1 1/2 for the first time in competition for a 13.2.

In the senior session Faith Torrez from Legacy Elite in only her second elite meet finished 8th all around with 55.25 also improving from her score that won the American Classic. She competed a new layout full out first pass on floor at Classics. Shilese Jones from Future Gymnastics finished 9th all around but was named the 2019 Pan American Games team as an alternate. Shilese showcased several new upgrades at Classics. Legacy Elites long time elite Gabby Perea back at classics for the first time since 2017 had a fall on her first event but hit her last three finishing off with a 14.05 on her best event bars for 7th place on the event. She missed a few connections and had to water down her last pass on floor but Gabby said she was just excited to back out there competing. The next competition will be the USA Championships in Kansas City Missouri August 8-11.
